Mana is a young mum fighting HER2+ breast cancer, and is also newly diagnosed (14 Nov 2016) with LAM - a rare and incurable lung disease.

Mana is a mother of five who lives in Tanumapua, Samoa, and she has travelled here to NZ for her treatments because the treatments and surgeries she needs are not available in Samoa. Her first rounds of chemo and surgeries (2015) were covered by the Samoan Medical Scheme, but that funding is limited.

A former Miss South Pacific and Miss Samoa, Mana decided to use her speaking skills and public profile to go public with her breast cancer battle in Samoa, and has become the unofficial 'face' of breast cancer for women in Samoa. Mana wanted to raise awareness on the contributing risks to breast cancer in Samoa, and found that many Samoan women shied away from discussing breast cancer. In going public with her story, Mana hopes to shed light on the importance of early detection and recognising the symptoms of breast cancer.

Mana's latest oncology reports (28 Nov 2016) show that the cancer has now metastasised into her lungs and her overall immune system is very weak. Her oncologist has recommended a chemotherapy treatment plan that begins almost immediately (05 Dec 2016) with a round of Herception at a cost of NZD$11,000. Depending on how well Mana tolerates this, it will be closely followed by Taxol and Pertuzumab, bringing the cost of each chemotherapy cycle up to approx $NZD20,000. On top of those costs will be further radiological expenses (scans etc), plus the ongoing oncologist attendance. The number of chemotherapy cycles will be decided by Mana's oncologist as she very closely monitors Mana's tolerance of each treatment.

Funding is needed so that these treatments can begin immediately. At this point, almost all of Mana's and her family's personal funds are exhausted. Luckily, Mana's sister Via and her family live here in Auckland, so accommodation and transport is largely taken care of. Being a Samoan national, Mana is not entitled to any NZ funded chemo treatments, which is why we must pay for them.

Please help us raise funds to contribute to Mana's continued treatment here in Auckland, in order that she may have the opportunity of more years to enjoy watching her children grow, and to spend more time with her family and loved ones.

We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for any help you can give, and we intend to pay this forward in the future.

Tina De Suza's involvement (page creator)

I'm a very longtime friend of the family, and have been asked by Mana to run and administer this page on behalf of her and her family.

Fa'afetai (Tai) Taufua of Taufua Beach Fales in Lalomanu Samoa, is Mana's mum. Tai and I have a very long friendship that spans well over ten years. I have lived and worked at Taufua Beach Fales in the past, as well as countless visits over the years. I initiated and managed a very successful fundraiser for Taufua Beach Fales after the devastating tsunami in 2009.

Thank you - Tina De Suza, Auckland

27 March 2017 : Our final update :o)  27 March 2017

Good morning all! Our page reaches its time limit on 31 March 2017, and it seems fitting that Mana has given me an update she has written, which will be the final one.

Thanks to everyone who has been involved ... bless you all. Tina xoxo

Mana says ....

There is a Samoan saying, “Ua mutia le ala,ua papa le fali”, I dare not attempt to translate for fear of failing to give these words its full credit. However, they are spoken by our orators and high chiefs to relay their gratitude to all who have come in answer at their time of sorrow or time of need. In our mother tongue, it is an expression of infinite gratitude.

My mother and I, along with my loved ones wish to express our utmost thanks to all of you who have given whole heartedly to our Give a Little plea. Your generosity and love is remembered in our prayers of praise and thanksgiving.

In the recent months, I have silently read all your loving and encouraging words, always always with tears. I apologize for the silence, it takes a lot for me to put my thoughts in writing. The overwhelming emotions I have felt throughout this journey, of pain, of sorrow, of hope, of gratitude and of love can never be fully expressed in mere words.

Several months back I was an invalid forty one year old mother, bathed in bed by her own mum, like a child, yet unlike a child. My younger sister slept on the floor next to my bed so someone could hear my breathing through the night. My three year old nephew climbed into my bed to help me greet the day or to simply be my companion. I shut the rest of the world out, my strength to physically and mentally interact with people was robbed by cancer and Morphine was my solace. My curtains were closed, always. I had half heartedly given up on life.

I have come this far by God’s grace and through the love you have shown here. Music now wafts from my room, my curtains are always open and I am dancing with my nephew. My children are laughing more, my husband too. My parents still have not stopped crying, as any grateful parents would.

My response to treatment has been hailed as excellent by my oncologist. Considering I was a borderline candidate for treatment, I personally feel like a living miracle. God be praised!

I am living on borrowed time, I know. If there is anything I have learned, it is to appreciate whatever time I am given. And I thank you from the bottom of my heart, for your love, your generosity and your humanity for giving me time…a priceless gift.

Tina, thank you for loving me, like a true sister would. For making me laugh, for holding my hand from afar, for embracing me as one of your own. I would never have been able to do this without you. I love you my darling friend.

Faafetai, faafetai, faafetai tele lava.

Thank you, thank you, thank you all.

God bless you.
