Help us to fundraise for Anthony's second cochlear implant.
Bay of Plenty
Anthony is nearly 17 and has been deaf since birth. After over 2 years of appointments and grommets etc he was finally diagnosed as severe profound deaf and got bi-lateral hearing aids just before his 3rd birthday. He was then able to hear enough to learn to speak for the first time. Hearing him say 'mum' for the first time was magical.
At around 6 years of age Anthony was also diagnosed with what is essentially Aspergers as well. Such a lot to deal with for a young boy who already struggled to make himself understood.
After lots of applications and tests, around his 8th birthday he was successful in getting a cochlear implant in his left ear as his hearing had deteriorated and he could no longer hear much at all.
Last year just before xmas he complained he couldnt hear us very well anymore. We just though it was a faulty hearing aid as he had been tested 3 months earlier and he had the same results (severe loss) in that ear as he had been getting for 13 years. It came as a complete shock to find out he has now lost all his natural hearing and needs a second implant to enable him to lead a normal life.
The government only funds one implant for already diagnosed children, so we need to fundraise the $43,000 needed for the surgery and implant. We really apprecaite any help towards this goal.
We are Anthony's parents; Lisa and Andy. Anthony is 16 years old and needs a second cohlear implant to be able to hear. As all parents would we want to make sure he has every chance possible to be a fully hearing adult and contributing member of society.
The funds raised will be used to pay for the surgery and all equipment needed for the cochlear implant to work. Any excess funds raised will be donated to the Hearing House for other deaf children to benefit from.
