To support Cathy during her treatment and recovery from Leukaemia. She who has spent her life helping others needs our help now!

Taranaki

Our dear friend Cathy was diagnosed with Leukaemia about 5 weeks ago. She is going through treatment at Palmerston North & Wellington hospitals which will take at least 6 months. Cathy and Grant (beloved husband of 12 yrs) cannot work through out the treatment.

She works at Victim Support because of her passion for social justice and heart to support people at their time of need, During the lock down, she was working from home as usual when she developed a sore throat and temperature. After blood tests she was urgently airlifted to Palmerston North hospital where she received the devastating news that she had leukaemia with only three months to live if she didn’t get treatment immediately.

Cathy was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) on the 5th May 2020 and immediately began an aggressive round of chemotherapy. She has been classified as ‘high risk’ and needs a bone marrow transplant in Wellington Hospital for her long-term survival.

Cathy is now in hospital and urgently needs us to help her through this time as she fights one of the greatest battle of and for her life.

I would love for all of Cathy's friends around the world to make a donation to help with all the expenses that they are facing during Cathy's treatment and recovery. Cathy and Grant still have to pay for mortgage, rates, insurance and many other expenses as they go through treatment. Lets help Cathy and husband Grant as she battles life threatening Leukaemia. Every cent counts and can make a big difference.

Grant, her husband, her primary support and caregiver, is staying with her in Palmerston North and will also be staying with her in Wellington while she has the bone marrow transplant and recovers.

They need our financial help - any donations will be received with much gratitude.

With love and appreciation from Cathy’s family and friends.

In remission & preparing for bone marrow transplant.  26 July 2020

Posted by: Cathy Stevens

On July 14th after two rounds of chemotherapy, I into complete remission and there is no trace of leukaemia in my body. The haematologist said he couldn't ask for better results. all glory, honour and praise to our Lord Jesus Christ!

This is the first step and means that I can now proceed to a bone marrow transplant in Wellington.

On the 25th July, I finished a “holding” round of chemotherapy – this is to keep the leukaemia away prior to my bone marrow transplant in Wellington. (pictured)

The Wellington transplant team have confirmed they have a male donor that they are testing, who is on the UK donation database. There are 16 genes they need to match and he matches me 15 out of 16. (the last one is not important apparently.)

He has agreed to donate and has gone through the 1st lot of medical tests for infectious diseases. He has to talk to a doctor and general health checks before they sign him off.

Once signed off they will freeze his bone marrow donation and fly it over here. (they would normally have someone go and collect it but have had to change procedure due to Covid)

They are looking at late August for my admission to Wellington hospital and 1st week of Sept for the transplant.

3 months into this journey so far and we will be down in Wellington for at least another 3 months.
