It has now been 2 weeks since Danny’s last muscle transfer from his thigh to his lower leg and healing has been going well.

After a week he was able to start hanging his leg off the bed at 5 minute intervals a few times a day which have increased each day -

He is now able to move around and have his leg lowered whenever he has the energy to! He has been around the block of his ward a couple times over the last few days using crutches, though he prefers a walker.

Dan was also able to start using a shower again which was a luxury he had missed! Sometimes they take the bandages off his leg and let him shower without it but mostly that goes into a bag to keep the skin graft dry.

Today he was told he may not be able to get home if he can’t safely use stairs on crutches so of course he got out of bed and proved he could!

The skin is sticking, the muscle is shrinking and so far everything leg related is going well! So well that there is talk of a possible return home on Friday.

His vision has not improved and he still keeps his patch on but has an appointment Thursday to see what their thoughts on the double tilted vision are.

They had discovered blood clots in his lungs but after another head CT they decided the bleeding had stopped and he is now on a daily dose of blood thinners.

There are many in house appointments, nurses visits and hospital follow ups to come but we are so optimistic about the future and can’t wait for another mini lockdown as a family!

Despite the accident, all the pain, stress, failed transfer and the little bumps so far we feel more blessed than ever! How lucky we are to be alive! For our friends and families, kind strangers, amazing country, free healthcare and not too shabby hospital food! Thank you to everyone who has been a part of that.

We will post another update when Dan has settled in at home.

    Stay safe!

    Kathryn.

On Tuesday morning Danny underwent his 4th operation where they planned to take fat and skin from his thigh to fill in his shin. During the operation they found this was not a viable option and they decided to take his quad muscle instead.

He woke up in good spirits that afternoon but by 11pm that night he was having a severe reaction to something which caused a serious decline in his mental state which kept him awake until Wednesday night.

After a good nights sleep he’s back in high spirits! He even managed to get into a chair for a short time today!

The muscle in his leg is going well so far and has surpassed the life of the last transfer which we are counting as a small victory. We are praying in the next 7 days nothing changes so the conversation changes to when he will be able to go home to heal.

His vision is still double and he is still wearing an eyepatch but after a brain injury this isn’t too out of the ordinary and we hope to have another CT to check progress in the brain after Saturday sometime.

He was able to see the kids twice for short visits before the last operation ( he won’t be able to again until he’s discharged due to Covid and his leg needing to be kept elevated due to the transfer. )

Carter and Winter keep busy doing arts and crafts to brighten Dans room, it will be full by the time he leaves!

The Nurses in Lower Hutt hospital are incredible and Danny enjoys all his interactions with them ( which are usually every 30-60 minutes! ) they have also played a massive part in his mental state while he’s been there!

Thanks so much for all the comments of support and donations! Danny comes and reads them often and is so immensely grateful.

Danny has now had 3 surgeries on his leg and 4 blood transfusions.

During the second surgery they removed half his abdominal muscles and removed some skin from his left thigh. 24 hours after this surgery they noticed the colour of the muscle changing and rushed him back for another surgery to try to save it but were unable to, there was too much clotting due to a twisted vein trapping the blood, they had to remove the muscle and skin graft and go back to a vacuum seal.

He will now have his 4th surgery on Tuesday where they will take some fat and skin from the other thigh to try to close the wound on his lower leg again.

The surgeon expects it will take a year to recover and be back at work full time.

Danny and Kathryn are still remaining positive and want to express their sincerest thanks for all of your generous donations and well wishes!
