Help us purchase and maintain consumables for a Continuous Glucose Monitor for our 4 year old son Grayson.
Auckland
Our son Grayson is 4 years old and was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes 6 months ago. Currently we need to test his glucose levels 6+ times a day which is done by finger prick, and give him insulin via a pen needle up to 4 times a day. He has been approved to get a fully funded insulin pump in December which should greatly improve his blood glucose levels.
For those that don't know, Type 1 Diabetes is an auto-immune condition. Grayson's pancreas has stopped producing insulin. The doctor likened this to winning lotto in the worst possible way. A lot of factors have to come together for this to happen, but basically his white blood cells have started attacking the beta cells which release insulin from the pancreas. Insulin is needed to help transfer glucose from your blood into your cells for energy. When Grayson has low blood glucose levels (hypoglycaemia), he feels dizzy, lethargic, cold and hungry. If he doesn't realise (thankfully he can still most of the time tell us he is feeling low), it can be life-threatening and he could fall into a coma if it is not treated immediately. High levels are also dangerous as this can cause ketoacidosis. When Grayson is high, he is grumpy, tired and thirsty.
When he gets his pump, we hope to purchase a CGM (Continous Glucose Monitor) sensor which transmits his glucose levels to the pump - dramatically reducing the amount of times we need to test his blood via finger prick. This particular sensor, (which is not funded - all sensors are not funded currently), has a low glucose suspend function. This means it will tell us when he is about to have a hypoglycaemic episode (low blood sugar) so we can stop it before it happens.
This sensor, along with the pump, will give us peace of mind, reduce the invasive finger prick tests, eliminate the multiple injections - and allow Grayson to live as normal as possible.
Grayson is my son.
To purchase the transmitter starter kit ($780), and the consumables for the CGM ($4730 per year).
World Diabetes Day 15 November 2020
We are so overwhelmed by the generosity and love shown by everyone. Thank you to each and every one of you that has helped Grayson. We are counting down the weeks until Grayson’s pump start on Dec 7.
Yesterday was World Diabetes Day and we went to the zoo for a Youth Diabetes Xmas get together. Grayson got to hang out with his fellow type 1 warrior buddy Du’Handre who is also 4. They had a great time running around and acting like monkeys ♥️
