On Monday 24 February 2020, Harvey was suddenly diagnosed with Leukaemia at just 2 years old. This was after many doctor appointments over several weeks when he had an unexpected sore foot and knee on his right leg. Some days he had no problems and others he could not walk properly. We all thought he must have hurt himself on the playground at day care or maybe on the trampoline at Nana and Grandads. But nobody expected this.
Things have moved quickly since finding out.
The next day Harvey, Harvey’s Mum Lexy and Harvey’s Nana Leeane were flown from Masterton to Christchurch Hospital by LifeFlight. Harvey’s Dad Sam had been working in Brisbane and got home on the first flight back.
In less than 48 hours, Harvey has already undergone surgery including a small dosage of chemotherapy, blood and bone marrow samples, and a PICC line inserted into his wrist.
Today on Thursday 27 February it was confirmed that Harvey has Acute Lymphocytic Leukaemia. The good news is that treatment will start immediately and this type has the highest cure rate at approximately 90%. Harvey is in the best place possible and there is huge support for Harvey, Sam and Lexy from family and friends.
However there is still a long road ahead. We hope Harvey will be home in Masterton within five weeks but he will likely need ongoing treatment for 3-4 years to come, including regular trips to Christchurch Hospital for treatment.
We will do anything to help our Harvey get better. Anyone who has met him will understand his infectious and cheeky personality. Please help if you can.
