Let's try and give Faith the best chance to recover from her fractured hip.
Waikato
Faith is my 2yr old filly who has a suspected fractured hip. There is a chance that she can recover from this but it going to be a long and expensive road to recovery for her. The only way to know for sure how bad the fracture is will be to do a bone scan which is really expensive (quoted around $2500). With an already large vet bill and more to come with the on going cost of her recovery the bone scan is out of my finically reach without help.
Currently we have three options going forwards with her. 1) give up hope on her and put her down now. 2) she is confined to stabled and given heavy pain relief and we give her three weeks to show some improvement. If she does, we keep it up until she is healed, if she doesn't then she will need to be put down. 3) do a bone scan now, see where and how bad the fracture is and be able to make a fully informed decision on whether or not she will be able to recover from this.
For now we are going with option two and hoping for the best, however if I can raise enough to do a bone scan than that be ideal. It doesn't change how we will treat her but it will mean I will know for sure that she has a chance to recover from this. I want to give her the best chance to recover from this but I will not let her suffer, if it become in her best interest to put her down then that's what I will do. Her welfare is paramount in this.
All funds will be going towards her current vet bill and the ongoing cost of her treatment. If enough is raised then I will book her in for a bone scan.
4 weeks post accident. 11 July 2018
For those who are interested in keeping up with Faith's recovery the vet came the other day for her 3 week post clinic stay and 4 week post accident assessment. They were very happy with her progress so far and she is doing better than they expected her to.
We won't know for sure if she will recover enough to be a broodmare until around the 6 months post injury mark. But so far she is doing everything right.
