Help Jay & His Family

Hello everyone.

My name is Jan & I am not used to asking for help however we need some help and a lot of good vibes.

Unfortunately, I have no family in Auckland and sadly my son is in Auckland Spinal Unit meaning my family and I are paying nightly for a hotel for me to stay here to be with Jay, along with Taxi's to and from the hospital.

Recently for the first time myself, 4 of my grown children along with my 9 grand children went to Lake Rotoiti for a weekend holiday.

We had only been there for 10 mins and my youngest son Jay climbed up a cliff face to have a fun jump in to the lake. All while thinking"boys will be boys" I watched helpless as he misjudged the distance, overbalanced and hit the water with such force he broke his back.

An ambulance took him to Rotorua Hospital in agony.

2 days passed and then he was taken in for his first operation for plate screws with a bone taken from his pelvis to fuse.

This didn't go well at all, 5 days later Jay was taken back to theater to lift the plate and take out more bone along with decompression of his spine as this was not done during the first operation.

He still didn't recover so another x-ray and MRI later it was discovered that he also broke his lower back which was causing his spinal cord to be squashed.

Jay was then airlifted to Middlemore, Auckland in a helicopter.

11 days following our transfer Jay was operated on again by the spinal surgeons who took out a tenth rib and in another complex operation they cut thru his diaphragm and went down in to the lower back, removed the bone that was compressing his spinal cord. Putting in a flexi cage and using the rib to make the bone graft for a new spine.

All of these costs worry me as i have been on my own for 30 years now and while i realise there are far more people out there that are worse off.
