I am hoping to raise some money to help Scott and Kirsty, as Kirsty donates one of her kidneys to help save Scott's life.
Otago
Scott found out he had kidney disease 2 weeks after his 40th Birthday
A year ago, aged 44, his kidney function was around 17% and his doctor asked him to start looking for a living donor. His wife Kirsty (and my dear friend and colleague) was the first to put her hand up. As luck would have it (and it’s relatively unusual) Kirsty is a match for Scott, and fit and healthy enough to give him her kidney!
How romantic is that?
Over the past twelve months Scott’s health has noticeably gone downhill- and for the past 6 months he’s been unable to work. He’s a music composer (he’s composed music for my series Orangutan Jungle School) and his jobs are often short notice and fast turnaround meaning he has to put in long hours at the drop of a hat. This hasn’t been possible as his health has degenerated.
Kirsty has been the sole bread winner for a while, which means things have been tough.
As she is the income earner AND his donor, to save Scott’s life, she must cover her wage for at least 6 weeks (possibly longer) for the surgery and the aftermath.
The Ministry of Health does offer compensation that SHOULD cover Kirsty’s wage as a live organ donor. HOWEVER, it’s not that simple.
As a contractor the amount Kirsty and Scott are being offered is not enough to survive on during their recovery.
So, I am putting it out there for all Kirsty and Scott’s friends to ask for a little help.
I know that many of you have expressed that you would love to support them during this scary/amazing adventure . Consider this GiveaLittle Page as a convenient way to contribute rather than buying a bunch of flowers or a bottle of wine (although they quite like those as well).
This gesture will be so appreciated by both the kidney donor and the receiver and will help to alleviate some stress. It will certainly help with Kirsty and Scott’s recovery.
I am a close friend
The money will help cover living costs during surgery and recovery. Any surplus would be donated to a live organ donor charity.
Thanks Max!
