Supporting local small business owners Richard and Paula as Richard battles serious post-surgery complications and is unable to work.

Wellington, Kapiti Coast District

Richard and Paula are the owners and sole operators of the local Knitting and Lotto shop. On 5 December, Richard underwent surgery for a thymectomy after being diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis (MG). Unfortunately, his condition required a more invasive procedure. While the surgery itself was successful and Richard initially recovered well, Paula took on running the shop on her own, with Richard helping when he felt able.

Nearly four weeks later, serious complications have arisen. Since New Year’s Eve, Richard has been back in hospital battling blood clots in his lungs, fluctuating temperatures, pneumonia, a high heart rate, and sternitis. He has spent time in both HDU and ICU as doctors work to stabilise his condition.

As Richard and Paula are self-employed and rely entirely on their small business, this has created significant financial strain. Richard is unable to work, and Paula is faced with the heartbreaking reality of having to choose between keeping the shop open to pay the bills or being at the hospital supporting her husband — a choice no one should have to make.

This Givealittle page has been created so Richard and Paula can focus on his health and recovery without the added stress of financial uncertainty.

Any contribution, no matter the size, will make a meaningful difference. If you’re unable to donate, sharing this page is another powerful way to help.

Richard seems to have turned a corner and has now been taken from hdu to a ward. He has gone 24 hours with no extra O2 support - Progress!!

He had his first adventure off the machines that were helping him breathe and took a stroll downstairs in his wheelchair. Paula and Richard thank all of you for your kind words and generosity. They are overwhelmed by your support.

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
