Canterbury
Matthew Scott is a mountain runner currently completing a Bachelor of Science majoring in Conservation and Ecology at Lincoln University.
At age 13 he joined Hamilton City Hawks, competing in track, road and cross country races, but his passion has always been trail and mountain running. Now at 20, he has been training 6 to 7 days a week (often twice a day) for 7 years. In this time he has been a regular in the NZ trail running scene taking out wins and podium places at events such as the Mt Oxford Odyssey, The Kauri, The Waihi Nugget and Ring of Fire Relay.
After moving to the South Island to study, Matt now runs for Christchurch Avon. He placed 3rd in the NZ Junior Mountain Running Champs in 2016 and after battling injury in 2017 he moved his focus purely to mountain running. Putting in long hours of training, 100+ km/week, whilst living and working in the steep unforgiving terrain of Canterbury's Lewis pass over the summer he took another bronze in 2018, this time in the senior men's gaining him a spot in the New Zealand team for World Mountain Running Champs - finally reached his dream and long term goal of running for his country.
This opportunity to represent NZ is entirely self funded and the estimated cost of the trip (by Athletics New Zealand) is $6000. This includes airfares, ground transport, accommodation, food, uniform and insurance.
Any help at all is greatly appreciated to help Matt achieve his dream.
