Help my son to achieve his goal to qualify for the New Zealand Paralympic Team

  • Wells Fargo Cup

      2 March 2019

Amazing weekend skiing at the Wells Fargo cup raising funds for the National Sports Center for the Disabled. Was privileged to be teamed up with the HENSEL PHELPS team and in an amazing turn of even managed to take second place in the teams event ( actually tied for first 😉). Super proud to help such an amazing team make the podium, was a first for the team and myself being up there. DynAccess Ltd getting me the best gear to race on 👌🏻

  • Replacing gear

      16 February 2019

Out with the old (destroyed) gear and in with the new! And back on the slopes with a new drive and awareness of what needs to be improved on. He is looking good though - I'll post more videos on his Facebook athletes page- James A Thurston shortly. And good to see he is eating well - new photo in gallery.

So, new equipment and also his coaching fees paid for - and again - thanks to you all for your help and support.

  • A bad few days!

This hasn't been a great week for James. He managed to break another ski and also his goggles. This was when he crashed out and his goggles smashed into his head - a mild to moderate concussion being the result. He has been told to take a few days off to recover, so has slept a lot over the past couple of days. He says he is back to about 80% today.

So there is now some shopping to do! Thanks so much to all who donated - the give a little funds have been used for purchase of equipment such as a new helmet and body armour and to replace broken equipment🤔.

He is so much more focused these days. He has a lot of technique to learn and perfect - not the same as just caroming down the slope as fast as possible. But he is already improving, and it's not even been 2 months yet. He is starting to look ahead to his return to NZ and to being back in Colorado for the next winter season.

  • What's new

      3 February 2019

My apologies for the long time between updates.

In a way, not much has happened - training on training days and practising on days off!

James started off as a complete novice. He had never had his own equipment and had never skied a slalom course.

He now has acquired a sitski and the related skis (although one ski has already bitten the dust - or the snow, to be accurate!). He has needed to purchase a helmet with more protection for his face and body armour, as the gates on the course are pretty hard when you hit them.

He has also competed in his first competition at Park City, Utah. He was happy with the result - he didn't finish last and completed the course for all 3 days of competition. He now has a number of areas of improvement he is aware of and is concentrating on those areas in his training.

The novelty of skiing as an occupation has not worn off at all - he is loving it, even though this is definitely more serious than the skiing he did at home. He is really very focused and intent on improving his performance before the next competition.

He has already made some firm friends and is loving the States - what he has seen of it so far.

  • Safe arrival

      30 December 2018

James has arrived safely at Winter Park and has spent his first night there. His new sitski has arrived and, thanks to your generous donations, he has been able to purchase 2 of the 3 competition skis he needs. It's a lovely day there - just a bit cool (minus temperatures!). Paperwork and some orientation needed, but he was heading up the mountain at 5am so eager and raring to get started.

  • D-Day

Well, James is presently winging his way to San Francisco - en route to Denver and then to his final destination of Winter Park. He was very well organised ( thanks to his OCD Dad) and his bag packed ready to go a couple of days ago. He managed to catch up with family and friends before we dropped him off at the Palmerston North Airport around 11am this morning. He is apparently seated next to a crying baby, which has also just made a nappy deposit, and there is quite a bit of turbulence. After watching him take the escalator to the airport cafe, while still in his wheelchair, I'm sure he will manage to overcome these obstacles as well ( maybe). A 12hr flight lies ahead of him, then another 2 1/2 hr flight and a 1hr 42min drive. He has a 3hr stop over in San Francisco so hopefully will have plenty of time between flights. He is taking all in his stride (except possibly the crying baby - I hope the noise-cancelling headphones work)!

Another update - well, the tickets are booked and James flies out on 28th December. Exciting, but a bit scary! I have to say a big thanks to the Air NZ rep who spoke to us and was incredibly helpful. We should have people on the ground at most places to make things run more smoothly and we have tips on what to do. I feel more confident - and James definitely does. He is now sorting the last minute details- the house is full of paper! If you are interested, the SnowSport NZ page has a section on the High Performance Development programme - just to get some perspective on what he is facing. Click on the carded athletes to see his name😁

  • Update on progress

Hi and a big thanks to all of my friends who have donated and/or shared my post for James.

As you have now invested in his journey, I though you might like a quick update on how we are going.

James now has accommodation booked at Winter Park and his American Visa has arrived so we can book tickets. He has also been given access to a car with hand controls that he can use when he needs to. He is finalizing the purchase of his own sit-ski from people in the US. They will deliver it to Winter Park, set it up and adjust the seat to fit him. Still so much more to do, and running out of time as he hopes to be leaving at the end of December.
