Tonka the rottie needs 2 new knees!

  • Surgery is booked!

      2 March 2020

Thank you once again for all of your generosity! We are completely blown away by the level of support and love we have received for Tonka.

Good news though, he is finally booked in for surgery and will be going in next Thursday the 12th March with Veterinary Associates in Takanini.

Under their care he will receive a thorough check up, including x-rays, so we will know the extent of the damage to his knees and from there decide when he will have to go in for his second knee. As there is a 10 week recovery period per knee, we will look at getting the second knee operated on next year - which will also give us time to change insurance companies and to choose a policy that will cover it this time!!

I will post another update once surgery is complete :)

  • About time for an update!

      15 December 2019

Apologies for the lack of updates, but on Tuesday our baby girl was born! So we've been rather busy settling into life with a newborn :)

As for Tonka, a few people have suggested we try Vet Associates in Takanini so I rang them last Monday for a second opinion on Tonkas situation. They thought having both knees done was a bad idea and that we should focus on the affected knee before committing the other knee to surgery. Unfortunately, the cost is still at around $4000 however, this price will include x-rays and a proper diagnosis before surgery is undertaken. The vet I spoke to was amazing and very thorough with his explanations.

We have committed to taking Tonka up to Takanini as soon as we can in January so all the help we can get from now on is massively appreciated!

  • Thank you!

      7 December 2019

We are absolutely blown away by all the kind words and donations we have already received! Thank you so much.

We have also been told by numerous people that Auckland vets may be able to do the surgery Tonka requires for a lot cheaper (by up to half!) of what Vet SOS in Hamilton has quoted us so on Monday morning I will be contacting as many as I can to query the price on getting his surgery done up there.

If anyone has any recommendations on a vet that specializes in large dog (Tonka weighs 60kg!) surgeries please let us know.

I will keep you all updated x
