We're planting 1,500 native wetland plants to increase biodiversity on our farm and improve water quality.
Masterton, Wellington
Last year with your help we planted 3000 Manuka seedlings on 3 hectares of newly-fenced gully. That project went really well: a year later we had a survival rate of over 99% and the trees are thriving.
This year we’re focusing on a different project to establish a wetland area to support biodiversity and improve water quality downstream from our farm.
Rainfall naturally takes soil particles and nitrogen with it when it runs across pasture. By slowing down the water and giving wetland plants a chance to take up the soil and nitrogen, we can make a big difference to water quality downstream.
After some initial earthworks to create the contours we need, we’ll be fencing off the area to exclude stock and planting a mix of 1,500 wetland plants to create a natural buffer for some of the rainwater leaving the farm. Aside from providing food and shelter for a range of native birds, this wetland will filter the water before it leaves the farm - helping to improve water quality further downstream from us.
Every $10 you pledge buys a wetland plant, planted and protected by us, as part of a new permanent wetland.
Supporters will get regular updates of the planted block so you can keep up with our progress, as well as the first invitations to come along to one of our planting days.
Minor earthworks, fencing, buying plants and protecting them.
We've extended our closing date 28 August 2022
Kia ora amazing supporters!
We've pushed out our closing date for this fundraiser to allow a bit more time. It's still way too wet to attempt any planting so we've still got plenty of time to get stuck in once the weather improves.
If you want to help us out, please consider sharing a link to our page with others you know who might be keen to support us too.
