A chance to say goodbye properly to my grandfather and give me some closure. Travel costs are high as a result of my disability.
Wellington
Kia ora, my name is Lee.
My grandfather, Sonny Rutene, passed away last year and I'm heading from Wellington to Gisborne to his unveiling at the end of December. Travelling costs are high for me because I require support in my day to day life and I need to pay for accessible accommodation, petrol and someone to drive my car while I am up there. I have cerebral palsy, which affects my body movement and muscle coordination, and this year has been a tough one as I am recovering from brain trauma after falling from a wheelchair hoist. I get out and about and have fun regardless, and I am quickly getting back to my old self.
Travel costs are higher for me as a result of my disability - they are for every family with family members with disabilities - and getting up to Gisborne at the end of the month is important to me because i was unable to say goodbye to my grandfather properly at his burial. This trip will give me some closure. My grandmother (married to my late grandfather for 64 years) is also unwell, so this could be the last opportunity to see her.
A tribute to my late grandfather was published by the Gisborne Herald here: http://gisborneherald.co.nz/localsport/3880226-135/a-general-on-the-field
If you could spare anything to help me get up to Gisborne it would be greatly appreciated! I have saved $700 so far, but my accommodation costs alone are $1300. I will be posting photos of my trip on my City Ability page over this time - come over and check it out!
To help with accommodation costs at an accessible motel close to where my grandfather's unveiling will be held.
