Rehabilitation of injured and ill native New Zealand birds for release into the wild, with a focus on threatened species.

Marlborough

Kaikoura Wildlife Rescue operates a non-profit facility dedicated to the rescue and treatment of ill and injured native birds, primarily focusing on seabirds. Our mission is to rehabilitate and preserve native birdlife in the South Marlborough and North Canterbury region of New Zealand's South Island.

Kaikoura Wildlife Rescue is maintained voluntarily by wildlife biologist Sabrina Luecht, under a ten year Department of Conservation Wildlife Act permit and as a member of the Wildlife Rehabilitators Network of New Zealand.

Kaikoura Wildlife Rescue's main considerations are animal welfare and aiding already declining wildlife, with every bird deserving a fair chance and the best possible outcome. Injured and ill native birds are rehabilitated on a short-term basis until fit for release, while complex or long-term rehab cases are transferred to the nearest wildlife hospitals further afield, and patients that are unfit for release are humanely euthanised.

Due to the extensive costs involved in wildlife rehabilitation, Kaikoura Wildlife Rescue relies on the support of people like you. To date Sabrina has largely self-funded this work, which is a vital environmental and community service.

Ongoing funds are desperately needed to cover costs associated with treatment and rehabilitation - including medical, diet, housing and cleaning supplies.

Thank you for making a difference!

I have just watched the Emperor penguins episode of the new David Attenborough series Dynasties on the BBC in the UK. After seeing your video on Insta releasing a young penguin back into the sea, I had no choice but to support you. Such beautiful majestic creatures. Thank you for helping them x
