A stroll through New Zealand—for a good cause. Help Padam Jirel rebuild his home and livelihood after the Nepal earthquakes.
Otago
On October 1 of this year I will be setting off from Cape Reinga to walk Te Araroa—3000km of Aotearoa tramping awesomeness. Te Ararao is something I’ve wanted to do for many moons and I feel extremely privileged to be able to finally walk the walk. It also gives me an opportunity to help out a good friend whose home and livelihood were destroyed by the recent Nepal earthquakes.
Shivalaya— like so many villages in the Himalayan foothills— was largely destroyed by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake and aftershocks that claimed over 8,000 lives in Nepal.
Padam Jirel and his family survived the earthquakes but their home and guest house has been destroyed. Years of hard work reduced to a roof, collapsing walls, and a few structural beams. Padam has estimated it will cost approximately $14,000 (NZD) to rebuild his home and lodge to a reasonable standard.
100% of donations received go to Padam. So... like, share, follow and give a little to help Padam rebuild his home and guesthouse.

I met Padam in Shivalaya while trekking through the Himalayan foothills. He set me up in his guest house and cooked me a delicious feed. We spent the rest of the night drinking and talking. Proudly, he told me how he had worked hard all his life to start his business— portering countless packs, guiding people through the mountains, even a 2 year stint in Qatar's oilfields.
I ended up enlisting Padam's help to get me safely through the foothills. We became great friends during the trek and Padam and I have since kept in regular contact. He never asks for anything, he just rings to see how I'm doing. He's a true friend and one that is more than deserving of a helping hand.
Hey guys! 27 July 2016
Hey guys,
All settled back into my cozy flat in Dunedin, body has healed and ready for more tramping!
Padam is doing really well and the guest house is coming along nicely. He's just sent through a few photos of his beautiful family as well as a few snaps of the guesthouse-- some from just after the earthquake.
Hopefully I'll have a few more shots of the rebuild soon... Anyone feel like a trip to Nepal next year?!
Big love,
Nic
