Wellington

The government has announced a year-long inquiry into the disastrous “Hit and Run” military operation in Afghanistan that resulted in 21 dead and injured civilian villagers. NZSAS troops had gone to the village to kill or capture insurgents responsible for a fatal attack on a New Zealand patrol. But the insurgents they were looking for were not there and instead most of the casualties of the attack were women and children. Instead of admitting what they had done, the NZSAS kept the whole thing secret.

The inquiry is a crucial step towards establishing the truth of what happened and getting justice for the affected Afghan families. But the military seems determined to try to cover it all up. It recently

announced the creation of a publicly-funded unit, overall likely costing millions, to persuade the inquiry that it has no liability for

wrongdoing.

Lots of public involvement is essential in the coming months to ensure that the inquiry works and, hopefully, one day apologies and some compensation are given to the families for their wrecked houses and lives.

For the sake of the Afghan families, and for the sake of New Zealand being able to front up, please support us. Help pay for the posters and leaflets and all the other campaign costs that will ensure the campaign continues until the truth is established and justice is achieved.

Kia kaha team, Great to see an inquiry beginning. Thanks for your efforts so far and continued energy. Big thanks also to Nicky Hager and Jon Stephenson for catalysing the issue with the detailed and soundly-sourced ‘Hit & Run’ so that a strong inquiry became necessary in a previously covered up issue. Without an ongoing spotlight on these issues, the inquiry may shy away from confronting the truth.
