Written by Kaelem's mother:

In February this year, my son, Kaelem, at 31 suffered a stroke which has left him unable to use his right hand and walks with difficulty. As he is a sound engineer, he has had to give up his job and move into care with my sister in South Africa. Kaelem was living in his own flat and working hard as a sound engineer and musician. He was making his way and carving a future for himself under the name "Terrasoul". Here is the link to listen to some of his music: https://soundcloud.com/terrasoul

His dreams and hopes have been dealt a severe blow and he is struggling to see his future.

My sister is also caring for her adult son who is wheelchair bound. Kaelem needs ongoing care and medical treatment including physiotherapy and occupational therapy to enable him to recover fully. Doctors have said that this could take a year or more. Kaelem is overwhelmed by his circumstances and the costs of treatment.

As his mother I want to support him both emotionally and financially and am returning to South Africa to provide this support - I will be not be able to work and have to fund my young daughter in New Zealand as well as our rental home. I have now also dipped into my retirement savings to help as much as I can.

I am a close friend of Kaelem's mother. I worked alongside her in early education in Wellington, New Zealand. Dominique is a loving and kind educator always going the extra mile for the children/families, in an industry that pays little.

Use of funds

The money will be used for his ongoing treatment and rehabilitation.

A quick update and huge Thank You to everyone who has donated, sent messages of support, encouraging words and held us in prayer and love in this time. Kaelem is home now and making steady progress each day. We have found experts in their fields who will provide OT and physio and though it may take time, I am hopeful and faithful that the light will continue to burn brighter with each challenge we overcome. Please know that without your love and support, I could not have done this. Nga mihi mahana/Warm thanks.
