We're raising funds to get a couple of our local rangatahi takatāpui up to Aotearoa's national hui for queer Māori, in Tāmaki Makaurau.

Dunedin, Otago

Hui Takatāpui is a space for rainbow Māori community leaders to come together in a huge celebration of queer indigenous life. We're on a mission to bring a couple of our local rangatahi takatāpui up to Aotearoa's national hui for queer Māori, in Tāmaki Makaurau. Held November 4-6th 2022 at Mātaatua Marae.

Sponsor us $3 per km for three of us to journey the 1,500km from Ōtepoti to Tāmaki Makaurau!

Why is this so important?

For takatāpui in Ōtepoti it sometimes feels like time travel. Welcome to Aotearoa 20 or 30 years ago, where the conversation around queer Māori life is in a different place.

"If we're getting to the truth of it, in Dunedin there's still a sense that if you're Māori you don't belong, let alone if you're takatāpui. The racism is a lot more tangible here in southern Te Waipounamou and that's what I mean by time travel. For our takatāpui here this means being disconnected from whakapapa, tikanga, identity and support."

- Max Wolfgram (Te Arawa), Chair, Dunedin Pride

To see a strong, connected takatāpui community here in the south, we need access to our national kōrero. We deserve connection with our whānau across Aotearoa and tautoko for the social chage we're here to lead, because we need change now.

We want Hui Takatāpui to time travel with us. We'll celebrate the great things our local community is up to and share in stories and knowledge. This is us investing in and celebrating our new generation of leaders.

Please support Ōtepoti to get to the hui!
