Please help Riding for the Disabled Waikouaiti fund an Indoor Arena for a warmer safer riding experience.
We often have to cancel our scheduled days because of the bad weather and this can be a huge stress and disappointment for our attendants, especially those who struggle with Anxiety and Autism. We operate at the Waikouaiti Race Course and most our attendants have to travel, it is a long journey to arrive and have the weather change and be told its cancelled. Its also located in a spot that seems to get a lot of wind which isn't nice. If it has rained the day before the grounds can also be too wet to operate.
Building an Indoor Arena will mean providing a safer facility with a soft riding surface, it will also mean we can continue our service regardless of the weather conditions which is always a ongoing issue for our service.
Bonus, our Indoor Arena will be hired out to the public! We believe this will also help our small community grow. The Arena could be used for schools and other groups in the wider community. Money from hiring out the Arena will go towards the running costs of the Arena.
Please note that if the Indoor Arena for any reason cannot be completed your generous donations will not be profit and still be used for Waikouaiti Riding for the Disabled, the money will go towards safer equipment, upgrading equipment, horse maintenance and feed.
The Waikouaiti Group was established in 1980 to provide riding for patients from the nearby Cherry Farm Hospital.
Since then we have continued to provide therapeutic horse riding and equine therapy for hundreds of disabled children and adults from Dunedin to the wider East Coast Community.
Not only do children and adults with disabilities get to experience the enjoyment of riding a horse, horse riding also helps them gain confidence and helps with muscles and posture with the movement of riding and learning to position themselves correctly. Riding for the Disabled Waikouaiti have loved watching the improvement of their attendants over the years and the Volunteers that help with this process love being a part of a great group.
