5th of January saw the Kaiaua Coast significantly damaged by the storm surge which left many streets under sea-water and debris.
Waikato
On Friday 5th of January a low pressure system bought heavy rain and strong winds to most of the North Island. A combination of the strong winds, low pressure and king tides resulted in inundation of several coastal communities to the east and west of the firth of Thames.
The Kaiaua Coast was particularly hard hit. Many homes and businesses in Kaiaua, Whakatiwai, Waharau, and Pūkorokoro-Miranda were flooded.
There was also major saltwater flooding of farms.
Hauraki District Council is creating a give a little page to help assist those Kaiaua Coast residents financially affected by the January 2018 storm surge that flooded the area.
The money will be used to provide one-off hardship grants to residents covering such things as -
*essentials for daily life (such as food, utilities, accommodation)
*extra financial costs due to flooding, and costs not covered by insurance or other funds
