I have been left with $12,500 worth of emergency vet bills for Leo's treatments, but no Leo. I am raising funds to pay off these bills.
Auckland
My first fur baby Leo had a bad habit of eating everything and anything inedible. Unfortunately, this habit ended him up in the vets last Wednesday morning after he was severely vomiting. The vet said there were no major suspicions, and the blood results all came back normal. They advised us to go home and return Thursday morning for additional tests. Wednesday night I was monitoring Leo in my arms, making sure he was ok. In the early hours of the morning I woke up in a pool of Leo's blood and rushed him to the emergency vets. Leo was barely breathing and constantly bleeding from his rear. The vets ran more blood tests and x-rays, and found that he had ingested something he shouldn't have, leading to his critical condition. As a side note, Leo has been insured his whole life, however, given his history, had an exclusion for foreign bodies.
They gave me two options for Leo:
- Put him down
- $10,000-$15,000 of emergency surgery and treatment, with a 50/50 chance of survival but 3 day window of vulnerability.
Following the vets advice and recommendations, I made the decision to go ahead with the emergency treatment, as I also believed Leo deserved one last chance.
He had a successful surgery, and they removed the foreign bodies. I got a call at 10 pm Friday night saying he was doing well but not out of the woods yet, so he spent the night in ICU. This morning at 9 am the vets called me to tell me that he had Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC), a life threatening bleeding disorder that can result in uncontrolled bleeding, organ failure, and death. They told me that they could put him through more treatments, including additional plasma transfusions, but there was a next to none survival rate, and that it wasn't recommended due to his physical state. The side effect of no more treatment was death within 24 hours.
I made the difficult decision to listen to the vets advice and put him down.
Unfortunately, this has left me with $12,500 worth of emergency vet bills that have to be paid by the 30th of April, or I will be referred to the debt collectors.
I have managed to pay off $2,000 worth of the debt so far, and working on accessing some of my KiwiSaver to help. So if anyone is able to assist in any way it would immensely appreciated!
The funds will be going to the two vet practices to cover the amazing treatment and service they provided. Any surplus will go towards raising his younger brother, Stitch, and paying for doggy day care so he's not left at home alone.
