A disabled driver urgently needs his modified vehicle repaired
Cambridge, Waikato
This vehicle gives highly valued independence to a disabled friend, and it urgently needs repair. In May, without warning, the engine timing slipped and the pistons bent the valves. Andrew Aylett is a tetraplegic who suffers from a degree of autism that exacerbates a brain injury suffered 40 years ago. He has considerable knowledge of cars and car mechanics. The car is a modified and certified 2004 Honda Odyssey that Andrew has driven for the past 10 years. A formal quote for a fully fitted replacement motor is $5,959, well beyond his current means. A new car would have to be purchased, modified and certified, a much more expensive process.
Andrew does a lot of work advocating for the needs of the disabled community in Cambridge and elsewhere. This car is an essential bit of kit for him. It allows Andrew to dismantle his wheelchair and place it on the back seat where he can reach it, giving him the mobility independence that he so greatly values. This car is large enough to transport other pieces if essential equipment as well. Using it he can visit other disabled and elderly folk near Cambridge, can attend medical appointments and purchase the items he needs to live -- all things most of us take for granted. In short, it needs repairing! The repair quote is available for viewing if required.
A family friend for the past 11 years. I have helped keep Andrew mobile in this car over that time, and helped keep his garden and lawn tidy.
All funds raised will be spent directly on the cost of replacing the car's badly damaged motor and getting all systems running normally, even if the target is not met.
