Canterbury

The Lincoln University Tramping and Climbing Club (LUTCC) have determined, through a survey of the club membership and the wider Lincoln community, that there is a large demand within the Lincoln community for a bouldering gym located in the Lincoln Township. We believe a bouldering gym in Lincoln would strengthen the community by providing a healthy, inclusive area for community members, high school students, university staff and students to exercise, socialise and have fun. The LUTCC believe bouldering is an ideal way to get the community involved in a fun form of exercise. Lincoln is already home to a large community of recreational climbers, and the popularity of indoor bouldering is rapidly increasing (locally and globally). The LUTCC believe we have been handed an extremely exciting opportunity; with the Recreation Center at Lincoln University allocating a space in the planned upgrades for the bouldering gym. However, there is no funding in the budget to build the facility and hence LUTCC have formed a committee in order to raise the necessary funds. So far we have raised $19,400, so we only have another $600 to go!!! Help us reach our goal and bring a bouldering gym to the Selwyn Region!

What is a bouldering gym?

Bouldering is a form of rock climbing that doesn’t involve ropes or harnesses, requiring only climbing shoes and chalk. Bouldering allows individuals to climb without a climbing partner. Climbing is a very inclusive, non-competitive, social sport, that encourages climbers to work together on solving climbs in a positive and supportive manner. Anyone can find their own challenge in climbing, regardless of size, shape or ability. All of this means climbing is a brilliant and compelling form of physical and mental exercise. Bouldering (especially indoors) is a popular entry point into the sport, as it is accessible, inclusive, fun and social, and doesn’t require a lot of expensive equipment or training. The sport provides an opportunity to develop confidence at heights and the ability to problem solve under pressure.

Design of the bouldering gym:

The funding will contribute to transforming a 65 m2 room located in the Lincoln University Recreation Center, into a community bouldering facility. The Lincoln University Tramping and Climbing Club (LUTCC) envision a design incorporating a range of wall angles. LUTCC aspire to create a facility that utilises the space in a way that engages users by providing a wide variety of climbing routes and a space to bring climbers of all abilities together.

If you are passionate about seeing the growth of climbing in New Zealand or would like to see a new sporting facility in the Selwyn district, then please get support this amazing project!

WE HAVE RAISED $19,400! $600 TO GO  6 October 2020

Some of you may already be aware of the fundraising the Lincoln Uni Tramping and Climbing Club (LUTCC) are doing for the Lincoln Uni Bouldering Gym, but if you don’t here is a quick update!

For the past two years LUTCC have been fundraising and advocating for a bouldering gym to be included in the Recreation Centre upgrades on campus. We believe that a bouldering gym will create a social space, in Lincoln, for people of all experience levels to gather, connect and exercise.

LUTCC must raise $20,000 towards the bouldering gym by January 2021 for the project to go ahead and we are so close to reaching that goal! To date, LUTCC members have volunteered 500+ hours doing jobs ranging from landscaping and gardening to waste management at events, to help raise funds towards this goal. We have also received a $5,000 grant towards the project from the Lincoln Community Trust! We are in the final stretches (less than $600 to go) towards our fundraising goal and we would be super appreciative of anything anyone can give towards the project to ensure that we make it across the line in time!

Ngā mihi nui,
