Maggie's journey to beat cancer

$9,150 of $40,000 goal
Given by 139 generous donors in around 6 months

The goal is to assist Maggie with paying for the treatment she so desperately needs, which is not available or funded in New Zealand.

Otago

Margaret Garden (lovingly known as Maggie to some and Mum to others) is in desperate need of our help. Being a humble, loving woman, she would not ask herself and so her family and friends are doing so on her behalf. Throughout Maggie's life she has given much to the communities that she has been involved with and now we are asking that they help her. Maggie is a loving mother and dedicated grandmother. Maggie's own granddaughter was diagnosed in 2012 at the age of only 7 months old with Acute Lymphoblastic Luekemia. Maggie did not hesitate to resign from her job and move to another city for months to help take care of her granddaughter and her sister while she was receiving treatment. Maggie was diagnosed with metastatic, grade 2 neuroendocrine tumour as well as carcinoid syndrome. In March 2018 Maggie received the dreaded news that her neuroendocrine tumour has progressed and she must now look at her treatment options in order to prolong her life and also attain a better quality of life. It is our hope that through fundraising efforts and the generosity of many people, Maggie can get on with focusing on her health and well-being and saving her energy for the fight ahead.

The only treatment option for Maggie is not available in New Zealand and she will have to travel to Melbourne, Australia to undertake the medical care she so desperately needs. The cost for treatment is approximately $40,000 which does not include flight and travel expenses let alone accommodation costs. She will also have to have 4 cycles, so that means travelling to Melbourne four times. Going through this type of treatment, especially in another country would be terrifying and so she is hoping her partner can travel with her to help and support her.

All funds raised will go towards her treatment plan and ultimately save her life.

Please consider making a contribution now to help her access this desperately needed treatment. Any amount you can possibly donate will make a difference and be greatly appreciated.

Use of funds

All funds raised will be spent on Maggie's treatment and associated costs. The treatment alone is $40,000 excluding travel and accommodation costs and can only be provided in Australia.

Change of treatment plan  10 June 2018

Hi everyone, we want to thank everyone who has donated so far.

Maggie met with a surgeon last week and he has advised he would like to perform surgery urgently. Maggie will need to travel and stay in Auckland for the surgery where she will have 40% of her liver removed, removal of her gallbladder, a partial bowel removal and removal of affected lymph nodes. As you can imagine this is major surgery and will require at least 10 weeks of recovery time. At this stage the family have decided this is the best option for quality of life and will ask that money raised is firstly used to support Maggie on her stay in Auckland and recovery time as she will not be able to work. The PRRT in Australia is still on the cards however this is dependant of the outcome of surgery. We wanted to be transparent and inform those who have donated and who donate in the future of where the funds will be used. Thank you all again.
