Support Manukura's 9th Hatchday Fund

Manukura, Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre's little white kiwi and the only white kiwi in captivity, is celebrating her 9th hatchday (birthday) on the 1st May 2020!

This year, amidst Covid-19, as our centre remains closed to visitors, Manukura's birthday celebrations will look a little different. Our rangers will of course have a celebration planned for Manukura. We know how much Manukura is loved by kiwis at home and visitors from afar.

By giving a little to Manukura's ninth birthday fund, you'll be supporting Pūkaha's kiwi programme. We have highly skilled rangers and sought after facilities where we contribute to kiwi hatches from all over the North Island - we hatch, rear and support kiwi releases into Pūkaha's reserve and beyond.

So how much does it cost to raise a kiwi?

$8 - Feeds a growing kiwi chick for 1 week

$18 - Covers health checks as the kiwi grows up

$48 - Covers the cost of a DNA test and health check. DNA testing is important because we can work out the best release sites so that they can establish their own territory.

Overall, it costs around $2,500 to hatch, raise and release a kiwi chick and monitor them using telemetry for their first year in the wild.

The 2019/2020 breeding season at Pūkaha was very successful - 24 healthy hatches from 25 fertile eggs.
