Marlies's family need help while they support their daughter through her ongoing cancer treatment
Wellington
At sixteen, the world is your oyster and the future is bright: my niece Marlies is the youngest of three siblings in the family and a talented artist with a great love of all animals, especially cats.
But in June 2017, on her sixteenth birthday, my niece Marlies was told she had osteosarcoma, an aggressive bone cancer, in her right shoulder. On that day, life changed forever for my niece, her family and her friends; plans turned into chemo rounds and surgeries.
The next 12 months saw 30 weeks of chemo treatment, a 'limb salvage' surgery to remove the diseased bone in her arm from shoulder to elbow – with metal and donor bone grafts - then further chemo rounds following the graft. And finally, two lung surgeries to remove surface lesions and nodules.
When we received the news that Marlies was in remission, we breathed a huge sigh of relief. Life could now return to some sort of normality.
Marlies came home to Raumati to start the next phase of her life.
Our relief was short lived: she has developed an extremely rare blood clot encroaching on her heart, which has never been seen before by her doctors and surgeons, and enlarged lymph nodes. We have been advised that the cancer has spread.
The family have drained monetary resources while they have put their lives on hold to support their daughter.
Darren is my brother, Marlies is his daughter, the funds will benefit the family during Marlies stay in hospital
The goal is $14,000,00 which will go a long way to cover bills and allow Cindy to be with their daughter during her ongoing treatment.
Update on 18.09.2018 - Cindy and Darren are devastated by the loss of their cherished daughter and are currently taking time out to work through their grief. The loss has taken its toll emotionally and financially. Funds received would support the family a little way financially while they work through the devastating blow of losing a child.
Marlies's Courageous Battle ends 16 September 2018
It is with incredible sadness that we announce the devastating loss of our most precious Marlies. This horrible disease took away a truly beautiful strong and courageous young woman, she fought a tough battle against an incredibly aggressive cancer. Marlies never once complained about her fate. She spent her day's cramming as much love and fun in as she could. Her passing was pain free and peaceful.
Thank you to everyone for your overwhelming and generous contributions which have gone a long way to support the family financially. A heartfelt Thank you to all for your generosity, support and kindness.
