Mau Whenua is an Incorporated Society that has been set up by Owner / Beneficiaries of the Port Nicolson Block Settlement Trust who oppose the sale of Shelly Bay.
The name means simply, ‘To lay hold of our land’.
Our objectives are:
To assist our people to retain their land and make it productive.
To prevent land being sold out of tribal ownership without permission.
Advocate for social and economic development through Education, Employment, Health, Housing, Land ownership and Cultural understanding for our people and the citizens of Wellington.
Mau Whenua will uphold the principles and values inherent within the Treaty of Waitangi.
The manner in which Shelly Bay has been taken from us is of genuine concern because it undermines the key values and principles that our people and all New Zealanders hold to be important.
Use of funds
To support the work and day-to-day functioning of Mau Whenua Inc in returning Shelly Bay to its rightful iwi ownership. Your contributions will help meet costs associated with legal action, communication/engagement, and administration.

Early closure of our page 16 March 2021
The High Court action by Mau Whenua Incorporated Society (MWI) to challenge the validity of the sale of iwi whenua at Shelly Bay (Marukaikuru) is now on hold indefinitely.
While some funds received by MWI through Givealittle were used for the original purpose stated e.g. administration, a lot of the Marukaikuru occupation expenses were absorbed by MWI since November.
Mau Whenua's occupation at Marukaikuru is now fully self-sufficient given that all comments for donations on Givealittle indicate the occupation as the intended recipient. Therefore MWI will ensure that all remaining funds raised in February and March are transferred into the Marukaikuru Occupation bank account.
