Help me raise money towards a 4-week midwifery placement in Vanuatu: to refine my skills and give back to the Vanuatu community.
Wellington
I would like to raise money towards a 4-week midwifery placement in Vanuatu. This would take place in 2019, during the third and final year of my Bachelor of Midwifery Degree.
From conversations with previous students and university staff, I understand that the placement will provide me with a rich variety of midwifery experiences, as well as significantly contribute to the total number of 40 births I am required to facilitate prior to Midwifery Council certification. I been told that this number can be challenging to achieve for many midwifery students and the Vanuatu placement is a great way to ensure I achieve these requirements. I also believe that this experience will make me a better midwife due to the increased number of births that I will attend.
As well as being able to refine my skills and confidence, the placement is also an opportunity for me to provide midwifery care to Vanuatu women, many of whom are living in poverty. I would consider it an honour to provide the best care I could for them.
My own children are 4 and 8 years old, but once they have flown the nest, I am very interested in overseas midwifery work. New Zealand will always be home, but I'd like to volunteer myself for 3-6 month placements working with refugees around the world. So I also feel that this placement in Vanuatu will give me a taster of what overseas work is like.
I intend to save money towards this trip myself, but it's uncertain at this stage how much money I will be able to save: I am currently on a student income, as well as a single parent. The University requires the bulk of the money by June 2018.
I've been told by the University that I will need a total of $5000 for a 4-week placement. This will include travel costs, insurance, school fees, food and accommodation.
