Molly King, Mycosis Fungoides and the search for an improved quality of life.
Wellington
This campaign is for my dear friend Molly who has Mycosis Fungoides; a very rare cancer that presents as a rash, tumours, skin lesions, and itchy skin. Over the several years that she has lived with this condition, she has tried nearly every treatment available to her including radiotherapy, chemotherapy, topical cortisone creams, daily morphine based drugs and extra liquid morphine when any further pain emerges, the list goes on. The only way to beat this disease is by undergoing a complete stem cell transplant, which unfortunately due to Molly's age, is not an option for her.
At this stage, Molly is seeking treatment to manage her symptoms, namely the severe and constant itching that she faces on a daily basis. Due to the debilitating nature of the itching, finding a treatment that could lessen the severity of this a top priority.
Molly's doctors have explained that there is a new medication that has the potential to do this, although it has not been proven, the potential benefit of this medication to the quality of Molly's life is more than enough reason to try it out. However, this medication is not subsidised and will cost over $100 per week. Additionally, it would be great if Molly could try out CBD (Cannabidiol) for symptom management, but this too is very expensive. CBD is a prescription medication in New Zealand and is not subsidised, it will cost around $900-$1000 per bottle.
Getting the public's help for this cause is very important; Molly has always been and continues to be very active in the community. She is a mother, a grandmother, a beautiful friend and a spiritual advisor. Molly has done so much for the community throughout the years, and now I hope that the community will come together at this time to give back to her. If we all give a little towards this cause, I have faith that Molly's quality of life can be greatly improved.
Molly has been a friend of my family for over 20 years, she helped my family settle into New Zealand when we moved here in 1997. Now I want to give back to her, especially because of the current situation that she is in.
If enough funds are gathered, Molly will be able to try the new medication that her doctor has suggested as well as CBD to control the symptoms of the cancer.
Disappointing news 30 September 2019
Dear Friends,
This is another update about where things are for me in terms of the money you have so generously given me.
It was my understanding that I was due to start treatment that would have been part of an international research, with a drug that had the potential
to be used in various types of cancer....my cancer being one of them. However, Dr George informed me that I would have to produce $100,000
before I could undergo the treatment.
I had not been given any understanding about this extensive amount until the day before I was to begin the first round of treatment. This devastating
news was the last thing I was expecting to hear and I am now in the invidious position of having to give you this hugely disappointing information.
My GP has since prescribed medicinal marijuana as an alternative which is being funded by your generosity.
Your funding enables its use for enough time to see whether it will offer some relief of my condition.
Thank you to you all.
The sincerity of your friendship leaves me hugely grateful.
