I need a lil' help as I have been given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work with the Peace Corp in Jamaica providing music therapy!
Wellington
Kia ora! My name is Ruby Mae Hinepunui Solly and I currently studying a Masters of Music Therapy at Victoria University. I have recently been accepted into a programme where I will be travelling to Jamaica for 10 days in May 2018 to provide music therapy to various groups in need with The Peace Corp. I'm looking forward to learning about a new culture, representing NZ, learning new skills, and helping people! But to get to Jamaica and pay the fees for my trip I'm going to need some help, hopefully that's where you come in :).
The trip is partially sponsored by Rotary and The Peace Corp, but I need to pay $4500 USD (which comes out at around $6000 NZD), a significantly higher amount than I expected. But I know that the experience and opportunity to assist in the parishes of Jamaica will be worth it.
Sad news... 29 November 2017
Kia ora tātou,
Firstly, I'd like to thank all of you for your donations. Setting up this campaign has been a really awesome experience and I've really felt the love from my community!
Sadly, I am having to cancel the trip after several complications. Long story short, I was confirmed to go on the trip and just needed to pay the deposit which I had prepared. The man organising the trip just needed to provide me with the payment details as sending a cheque to America was not the safest or easiest option. I ended up waiting 8 weeks and counting for him to follow up on this. Yesterday I received an email from him further advertising available spaces... despite him not answering my emails or phone calls requesting payment information. One of the big draws of this trip for me was that it was all organised, all I needed to do was show up and help people with music therapy! But I suddenly realised that the last thing I want to be doing is going to quite a dangerous country with someone who couldn't sort a bank transfer.
I am hugely disappointed, not just because I'm no longer going, but because so many of you have believed in me and donated so generously to this campaign. I have contacted give a little who will be reversing your donations within the next few months. The team at give a little have been fantastic, I thoroughly recommend them to anyone needing to use a crowd funding service.
The silver lining in all of this really has been that I've seen first hand how many people were keen to support me to do my thing! I know that something new and exciting will come and take the place that this trip has held... just waiting to see what that is! Thank you all again, so very much.
Arohanui,
Ruby Mae Hinepunui Solly
