I want to continue to pursue my dream of flying with Wanaka Helicopters next year and obtain my PPL and Commercial Pilot’s Licence.
Otago
My name is Jhalak Chadha and I have always loved air travel. As a kid, I always pestered my parents to take me to the cockpit as I was curious. Everything about flying intrigues me. My ambition for flying became stronger when I moved from India to New Zealand in 2015. I went for my first dual trial flight back when I was sixteen in Gore, Southland. While all my friends were learning to drive a car, I was up in the air.
In 2017, I became a member of Gore Aero Club. Flying is a passion of mine. Being up in the sky gives me a sense of freedom. During 2018, I moved to Cromwell, Central Otago which put a halt on my flying due to financial reasons. I am very grateful to be able to fly and live in New Zealand as the opportunity of joining the aviation industry in India is minimal.
A few weeks ago, I went for a trial flight with Wanaka Helicopters, in a Robinson R22 and I would say it was the best experience of my life. Being up in the air gives you a different perspective of the world we live in. The views are beautiful and breath-taking.
I want to become a helicopter pilot over an airline pilot as I see a huge potential within the industry. My ultimate goal with learning to fly is to become a rescue helicopter pilot. I have a strong sense of empathy and want to help people who are in need. Rescue helicopters enable people to be rescued from remote areas faster than any other means of transport. The role of a rescue helicopter pilot could be extremely rewarding as there would be a different challenge every day.

To pay my fees as I am not a permanent resident in New Zealand yet, I am not eligible for a student loan or allowance making this career financially more difficult. However, I have been working for the past year so I can pay for my fees.
