Hi my name is Nau Puriri and i'm a Para cyclist aiming for Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.

Nau Puriri - Para cyclist

Who am I:

I am a NZ para-cyclist and a volunteer fire fighter at the Ngunguru Fire Station.

Background:

At 5 years old I suffered a stroke and was initially wheelchair bound until therapy enabled me to walk but with limited function to my right leg. My right arm also has a mind of its own and takes some concentration to control at times. At 8 years old I was diagnosed with epilepsy and the severity of the seizures over time led to a brain operation at 12 years old to control this.

Over the years I have tried to be as active as possible and try various sports.

At the beginning of 2015 I was introduced to Road Cycling and was selected into the NZ Para-cycling Development Squad where I am able to compete against people with similar disabilities as myself. This has also recently introduced me to Track Cycling on the Velodrome.

My Goal is to compete at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, to do this i need to reach certain other goals along my way. As i live remote from from where i am best to train and to get to events for qualifying involves travel i am looking for help to get to these training camps and compassion along with assistance to purchase a Track bike of my own to give me a better chance at competition.

Coach Support:

With every athlete there is the need for a strong dedicated support network. Kerry Reyburn started working with Nau in 2015 dedicating time to progress Nau’s riding ability on the road and to ride with other riders with confidence. With the challenges of Nau’s disabilities this has been a journey for both Nau and Kerry that has been very rewarding.

Kerry along with Whanau have helped to finance and raise funds to attend events throughout the country and Kerry is currently attending various coaching workshops and working with other local sporting icons to help further both his knowledge and the benefits that will also come to Nau.

Kerry is dedicated to assisting Nau to the Goal of Tokyo 2020 and who knows where beyond that.

Kerry is a senior technician and associate at a local Architecture firm in Whangarei and has great support from the company HB Architecture in allowing the necessary time to attend the coaching workshops and the events Nau attends.

Kerry is the current President (2014-2017) of the Marsden Wheelers Road Cycling Club and has a strong community enthusiasm for cycling and growing the facilities we have here in Whangarei.

Use of funds

The funds are to be used for travel to Training Camps in Cambridge, Waikato that are over a few days each month along with travel to Invercargill for events in December 2017 and February 2018 where i aim to qualify for the 2018 World Track Para cycling.

I also require better equipment and wish to purchase a training bike along with a dedicated Track Bike.
