Whare Aroha CARE aims to raise $4m to build a village for the elderly. Only it’s a village with a difference.
Bay of Plenty
Instead of institutionalising people, we’re building them a community. Creating a lifestyle. Ensuring a tomorrow.
Nothing’s more natural than the idea the sun will rise tomorrow. And yet, people used to believe the sun revolved around the earth. What seems peculiar at first can appear conventional with hindsight.
As with many great ideas, it takes innovation to disrupt the traditional way of thinking. Like the way we care for the elderly.
WHO WE ARE:
Whare Aroha CARE-
· Is a not-for-profit charitable trust;
· won Trust of the Year in 2013;
· must move premises as our lease expires in December 2016.
OUR BIG IDEA
We’re building them a community. Creating a lifestyle. Ensuring a tomorrow.
$4 million will allow the following to be included in the construction:
· A community centre (which the public can access/benefit from);
· a children’s playground;
· another 7 bedroom household;
· 100% completion (not partial) of the reception area and car park.
INNOVATION IN AGED CARE
The care provided in the village will allow residents to live as they would if aging had not impacted their lives, had not robbed them of their wellbeing, had not stripped them of their memories. It’s a transformational idea. It will transform lives and it will transform the way aged care is delivered in New Zealand.
Residents’ lives will have purpose. They will continue to thrive, not simply exist.
The design and model of care is based on the acclaimed De Hogeweyk village in Holland, and will be the first of its kind in the Asia-Pacific region:

HELP US HELP THE AGED
60,000 kiwis have dementia – a number that will almost triple by 2050 – which means 2 out 3 kiwis are touched by dementia. Your donation will help us to build a facility that replicates as near to a normal life as possible for its residents. Familiarity and routine is proven to provide comfort and security as age takes hold. This familiarity creates a connection with times before now. And if we don’t have connections to the things we know and cherish, then we don’t have a future.
Because if we don’t remember yesterday, why would we care about tomorrow?
Please donate today and help us transform aged care in New Zealand.
Fundraiser for Whare Aroha CARE.
Whare Aroha means House of Love or House of Caring. Whare Aroha CARE provides home, hospital and dementia care. A new secure dementia care village is required to house our residents as the current building must be vacated. The dream is to build a village that reflects the collective memory of the residents.
