Tragic day for young family, car hit head .on then House razes to the groung
West Coast, Grey District
The young family of Heeni, Baydon and Lyla were left homeless after a nightmarish chain of events last week "it was just one thing after another".
Heeni and her brother were waiting at Stillwater underpass after a trip to Greymouth when a speeding car ploughed into them. Another vehicle behind them was also damaged.
Both her and her brother were taken to Greymouth hospital, she said "my partner rushed out the door as soon as I rang him (about the crash)".
Upon return to their rural accommodation they found the house on fire, and despite efforts by emergency services, it burnt to the ground. Tragically their pet dogs died in the blaze.
"We have nowhere to stay, we have a couple of pair of pants, but we have been offered heaps of kids clothes". She said Today.
The family have been working in the Upper Grey Valley on farms, and had only been living at the destroyed house for 3 - 4 months.
"My brother was with me when the accident happened - I'm glad we took my car, a Holden Sedan, we would have been worse off in his car." Heeni suffered bruising and her brother whiplash.
The family are now staying with Heeni's brother and the local community has been giving a hand.
" but the big problem is at the moment is we have nowhere to put it."
"I am trying to be positive, but its hard"
Lyla turns 6 in November and is missing her pets and possessions.
I was on scene behind the car that hit them and own the Local Ahaura Hotel with my Husband Rock.
I really feel for them and care.
Purchasing basic belongings and car.
