Youth Development Program
- $75.00 donated
- 2 generous donors
A $120 Donation will fund a student for a day on-board Steinlager 2 or Lion NZ encouraging Leadership, Teamwork and Personal Development
Many students have never experienced sailing and living on board a yacht, let alone the ocean itself. We want to make that opportunity available to as many young kiwis as possible. We keep the program cost to minimum however some families cannot afford the full cost of our program. Your donation will be used to significantly subsidise the cost for them.
Steinlager 2 and Lion New Zealand are unique platforms from which youth programmes can be delivered. Learning to navigate, sail, cook and live on our yachts leaves each student, at the end of their journey, with a great sense of achievement.
The maritime environment is one of New Zealand’s greatest treasures, which many of our young people have not experienced, so being able to sail on and be a part of this environment instils a greater appreciation and respect for our marine environment.
Funds donated will be held in a separate account by the NZ Sailing Trust and used specifically towards fully funding or subsidising the cost to deliver our Youth Development Program to Groups of Lower Decile School Students. The NZ Sailing Trust is a registered Charitable Trust and a not for profit organisation.

The NZ Sailing Trust’s mission and goals are to:
- Preserve the legacy of the significant sailing vessels of Sir Peter Blake and his teams
- To use these sailing vessels to provide experiences for young New Zealanders that bring to life the values of leadership, courage and teamwork
- To help ensure the future of New Zealand’s maritime industry through providing opportunities to young New Zealand sailors.
YOUTH LEADERSHIP AND DEVELOPMENT JOURNEYS
For many students sailing and living on board is a completely foreign environment, it takes them out of their comfort zone presenting opportunities for learning. The NZ Sailing Trust works alongside schools and charities to determine particular areas of learning to focus on for their students, from there the style of sailing the vessel and activities on board are selected. Thousands of young kiwi’s have now benefited from our youth programs.
Steinlager 2 and Lion NZ are unique platforms from which youth programmes can be delivered. The sport of maxi yacht sailing brings to life values like leadership, teamwork and communication as each team member learns the various roles they need to perform in order to reach their destination.
Learning to navigate, sail, cook and live on a maxi yacht leaves each team, at the end of their journey, with a great sense of achievement.
The maritime environment is one of New Zealand’s greatest treasures, which many of our young people have not experienced, being able to sail on and be a part of this environment instils a greater appreciation of the need to protect our marine environment.
