There's no info about the Kiwi in New Zealand Sign Language!! We need $15,000 for the NZSL post-production work.
Nationwide
There are no NZ Sign Language resources in libraries or on line about the kiwi and the numerous places, historic events or places of importance to our nations identity.
A group of people conversing in NZ Sign Language were talking about a Kiwi Release while huddled around the pergola in the middle of the Community Food Forest ‘Wai a Ariki Food Forest Onerahirahi’ behind Whangarei Airport came to realise there is a need to make a series of documentaries in NZ Sign Language. They agreed these documentaries are to highlight ‘Our Nation, Our Identity’.
The Kiwi is the first of the series.
The Project
Deaf Action is producing this documentary as a community initiative which reflects a Deaf Ecosystem.
- Jared Flitcroft JPF Films, an award winning (Tama) Deaf filmmaker, is the director of the documentary www.jpffilms.co.nz
- Maru Henare (child of Deaf parent) - camera person.
- Rachel Turner, a Deaf NZSL Interpreter, presents the information in NZSL when a hearing person is talking.
- Members of the Northland Deaf Community involved in the project filming around Northland.
The Kiwi documentary is partly funded by the NZ Sign Language Board and through fundraising by Deaf Action New Zealand.
To date 80% of the project has been completed. The remaining 20% is all post-production work. Due to COVID-19, the release of the documentary has been delayed until April 2021.
Distribution:
The completed documentary will be free to access and distributed to schools, museums, Kiwi tourism venues and online.
Deaf Action NZ advocates and lobbies together with Deaf New Zealanders to uphold their human rights to government, public and private institutions, and service providers, disability service providers locally, nationally and internationally.
Our project needs $15,000 to complete the remaining post-production work which was caused by some unexpected hidden project costs and timeframe delays by COVID-19.
