Restoration & maintenance of the ‘Aranui’ is a long-term project requiring the support of generous donors. 'Aranui' is the only Mk 4 left.

Auckland

The Solent Flying boat ‘Aranui’ retired in 1960 and was donated and relocated to MOTAT in 1966. Solent ZK-AMO ‘Aranui,’ is the sole remaining Short Solent Mk 4 in the world and represents a glamorous era in New Zealand aviation history, making it a highly significant artefact in the collection. Considered the most romantic air travel of its time, the TEAL Solent Commercial Flying boat operated as a long-range, luxury passenger service in the Tasman and South Pacific between 1949 and 1954. Thereafter, it operated exclusively in the South Pacific servicing the ‘Coral Route.’

Since moving back into the Aviation Display Hall following exterior restoration work and painting was completed in March 2019. Further restoration is continuing through the 2020/2021 financial year to return the flying boat to its original 1950’s appearance. The restoration and maintenance of the ‘Aranui’ is a long-term project requiring the support of generous donors.
