Whether you are a visitor to the Hokianga, your whakapapa (heritage) goes back to the Hokianga, or you were married or baptised in the church - Your donation will help us save this beautiful piece of the Hokianga’s history.

The Pakanae ‘St Lukes’ Anglican Church has been a place of worship since the 1920s, and holds a very special place in the hearts of locals and visitors alike.

The old building now faces the risk of collapse due to extensive exterior damage over years of wear and tear. Unfortunately, any funding applications to carry out necessary repairs on the Church have been either turned down or stalled.

Earlier in 2016, the damage to Pakanae Church was at its worst. With much of the Church’s foundation devastated by borer infestation, water damage and decay, any big weather event could’ve seen the building destroyed. Thankfully, a local benefactor provided an interest-free loan in time to fund some of the much needed restorations. The restoration project has thus begun on the most essential parts of the building (replacing the foundations and the roof). Unfortunately, the structural damage to the building is far worse than anticipated and with funds almost exhausted, we are now reaching out to the public to help finish the job. We are seeking an ambitious $100,000 to help fund the restoration of the building.

The goal of this restoration project is to ensure that the mahi wairua wawata of our tupuna (work of our ancestors) does not go in vain. Our tupuna built the Church with the expectation that future generations would have this Church as a place to worship for many generations to come.

Please help by making a donation and sharing with friends and whanau. Singularly we will fail, collectively we can do it. Every little bit helps.

Kia Ora!

Big thank you to everyone who has donated so far!!!  23 March 2017

Kia Ora Friends and Whanau,

Just thought I would give a quick update on the Pakanae Church Restoration Project. The response from the community has been amazing, with more than $1500 raised so far from donors across New Zealand, Australia and even the UK. Thank you so much to everyone who has made a contribution and shown your support for this beloved church.

I visited the church in November 2016 and managed to take a few snaps. Unfortunately not much progress has been made since then, due to lack of funding. However, with the foundations of the building now safe and secure we can get started on the rest of the project as soon as we have the means, without the worry of the building blowing over or being destroyed by the weather in the meantime.

I will update you all again once the gears kick in and we have made some more progress on the restoration.

Until then, arohamai!
