Help us get to Miami to speak at the SEGD Academic Summit about our work at the Festival of Transitional Architecture in 2016.

Wellington

Hi everyone!

We're a group of fourth year Massey Students who have recently been given an incredible opportunity to speak at the SEGD Academic Summit in Miami this June, for our work at the Festival of Transitional Architecture in 2016.

FESTA is Christchurch’s Festival of Transitional Architecture, initiated in 2012 as a way to reimagine a city in flux, finding its feet and redefining its spaces.

Our student design team, assisted by Jo Bailey and Nick Kapica, came up with Pipe Dreaming: a group of cardboard carpet cores suspended in a triangular form. They functioned as pavilion and at night they become a three-dimensional cinematic screen for a choreographed sequence of projections derived from re-using and re-thinking waste materials. The process is thus the content, folded-in or convoluted with the final pavilion/artwork.

Pipe Dreaming was an interactive structure made from waste and reused materials: cardboard carpet cores, used climbing rope, building waste and scaffolding. The tubes were suspended in a triangular form as a giant interactive mobile, and at night they become a three-dimensional cinematic screen for a choreographed sequence of projections derived from re-using and re-thinking waste materials. The name came from us wondering, is a sustainable future indeed a fanciful hope? Through the act of thinking creatively-dreaming can we bring new life to old materials and new life to the city in a state of flux?

Return flights to Miami are currently sitting around the $2000 mark. Now we know it’s unrealistic to think we’ll be able to get all nine of us there. We have secured accommodation, have entry to the conference covered, and have some pledges that should get one of us there, but we would really like to share this chance if we can.

We understand how big of an opportunity this would be for us; to represent Massey, The Festival of Transitional Architecture and young interdisciplinary designers, which is why we are trying our hardest to get over there. We are beyond grateful to have been given this opportunity and want to utilise it to the fullest. We would be so thankful for any donations you could make to help get us over there and we would be more than happy to reciprocate the koha if we can.

Thanks,

The Pipe Dream Tream
