Plant Puke Kopipi, Tiaki Promise for our future

$470 of $3,000 goal
Given by 11 generous donors in 12 weeks

Donations for native plants will be much appreciated, thank you. Volunteers can then plant the slips and continue this valuable project.

Northland

The recent one-in-500 Northland Rain Event on July 18 has created devastating large slips on Puke Kopipi / Ngunguru Hill.

Puke Kopipi Native Plant Restoration Group Volunteers need to raise funds for plants to hold and repair the slips, preventing further erosion. We want to get these plants in by the end of September whilst the ground is still soft before summer.

Puke Kopipi is an important landscape feature for the Ngunguru/Tutukaka community, pines were removed in 2011 and a Community Restoration Kaupapa begun to protect the natural, cultural and historic values.

Puke Kopipi Restoration Group Volunteers together with Ngunguru Community, Mana Whenua, Ngunguru School are developing a shared vision of Kaitiakitanga for future generations to respect and enjoy Puke Kopipi.

Removal of pest plants and restoration of native plantings, together with a designated Walkway to the top enables a special viewpoint overlooking Ngunguru Estuary and Sandspit/ Pii Manu - a peaceful place to walk and observe, a place of wairua…..

Use of funds

Funds will be used to buy native plants to stabilise the slips. These will be planted by the end of September but extra plants will be needed again next winter, and subsequent years, so funds raised will be appreciated for future planting.

Spring Tiaki Promise for Puke Kopipi,   29 October 2020

This Givealittle Environment Page for Puke Kopipi will end in 5 days, so we need your help, please take this opportunity to donate for trees.

We are a dedicated organised Volunteer Group and we are determined to replant these July Rain Slips. No doubt it will take several years.

Thank you so much to those who have donated for plants. Altogether this winter we have planted 2550 Native trees, 540 flax. We have lost some Manuka high up in the slips, in the recent dry weather but we will replant all the Slips again next winter.

We have had two 'Watering Bees' and we begin our Spring Weed Management this Saturday with a further Working Bee. Right now we have beautiful rain for Puke Kopipi, not too much! so that is really encouraging for our new recent plantings in the slips.

Thank you for your help

Robyn
