Project Little Oneroa

Project Little Oneroa is about working together to understand the problems and solutions for the polluted Little Oneroa catchment.

Auckland

Little Oneroa is a slice of paradise, almost. There's one thing wrong with this perfect spot and it's been wrong for a long time.

Currently it is functioning as a natural sewer system, where the run off from septic systems (or lack of septic systems) flows into the sea - well nearly to the sea. Most of the stream stagnates in a lagoon area at the beach where bacteria, mosquitos and ducks breed alike.

Children don't see this, instead they see tempting shallow water where they can wallow about with the ducks and sip away their thirst in the stream. It should be safe to let children do this, but it's not.

Its embarrassing telling visitors about these issues.

It's also not ideal having storm water drains conveniently remove toxic materials from the road into the stream

Waiheke Resource Trust is working towards sorting this problem out, please help this happen and give a little to help get the stream back to a safe standard.

Waiheke Resources Trust's involvement (page creator)

The Waiheke Resources Trust initiated Project Little Oneroa in August 2014. It is using a Community Development Approach to understand the problem and find the solutions.

About us

The Waiheke Resources Trust is a environmental organisation based on Waiheke Island in the Hauraki Gulf, Aotearoa. We are about creating a great place to live. We do lots of different things to reach that goal, including education, programmes, and events. There are lots of different issues that we think are important: water, waste, food resilience, biodiversity, energy and transport. The concept that underpins our work is the importance of a healthy and thriving environment. Such an environment allows a community to flourish, and within that community a strong economy can exist.

We work to celebrate and protect all the resources we have already, and build capacity and knowledge in the community toward the creation of a resource-full future for all.

Great work, would be nice to take the children there to play without having to tell them to get out of the dirty water.
