Put the spotlight back on Sumner Community Theatre

$3,035 of $85,000 goal
Given by 39 generous donors in around 3 months

We need your help to raise $80,000 by the end of June to keep the spotlight shining on Sumner community theatre.

Canterbury

When we lost our beautiful historic community hall in the Christchurch earthquakes, we were lucky enough to be able to rescue our stage lights, costumes, our props.

We’ve survived on bare bones and creative energy for seven years, still managing to put on a show that raises community spirit and funds for local groups. We are now excited to take to the stage in our new community hall - The new Sumner Centre : Matuku Takotako.

But before we do, we need to get the stage fit-out complete – we have the lights, but nowhere to hang them. The stage fit-out will cost $180,000. NZ Lotteries has given us a grant for $100,000 but it’s conditional on us raising the balance ourselves.

We need your help! Once these facilities are in place, they will be a community asset - available for use for anyone hiring the hall for events, parties, shows, bands, the list is endless.

The Sumner Cabarets have been used as a fundraiser for other local groups for over 50 years. We operate as a not-for-profit - that means every ticket sold goes straight back to the community. We now turn to you all to spread the word, and show us that you love Sumner Theatre. Please donate now.

Because Sumner Community Centre Inc is a registered charity, donations over $5 are tax deductible. (Charities Registration Number CC28910).

About us

Sumner Community Centre Inc. was set up 1962 to manage the community hall. Sumner Theatre Group operates as a sub-group and provides most of the funds to operate the community centre. The theatre group also raises funds for other community groups and sports clubs via their annual Cabaret shows.

Use of funds

The council has provided the multi-purpose facility, but we need to raise the funds for the theatre fit-out. This includes cabling and scaffolding for lights, stage fly system for backdrops, curtains and tabs, and everything else to dress a stage.
