With a population of only 400, the Stewart Island community needs help to raise funds to build a new multi-functional Heritage Centre.
Southland
The Rakiura Heritage Centre Project aims to construct a purpose built, multi-functional facility to house, protect, and display the 10,000 items in its collection which are of regional and national importance. Stewart Island plays a significant and unique role in the story of our nation and its people - it is important to protect and share this knowledge along with the rich history of the Island. Education and geneological research are also priorities of this project along with providing better viewing access.
A special feature will be the beautifully hand carved 4m Millennium Log which shows the connections between Land, Sea, History, and the People. This will be a world-class facility that will allow visitors and residents to interact with our heritage and discover the connections between our past and what you experience on the Island today.
This is a big budget project for a small community of only 400 people (and 36,000 visitors), however we already have almost a third of the required money in the bank. We are maximising what we can get from the large funders but we need the support of our wider community.
The Rakiura Heritage Centre Trust was set up specifically to focus on and manage the process of designing and building a new Heritage Centre on Stewart Island.
Rakiura Heritage Centre Trust is formed to build the proposed replacement building for the Rakiura Museum on Stewart Island. Purpose built to high conservation and energy-saving standards the heritage centre will display and store the 10,000 items in our current collection. The Rakiura Heritage Centre will be a focal point for residents and visitors interested in Stewart Island / Rakiura history, a place to learn about the past and to view historic treasures. Our small community needs financial assistance from all those with a Stewart Island connection or a love of the Island.
