Help us give Robyn a fighting chance to share more time with her family and friends by enabling her to receive an unfunded cancer drug.
Canterbury
Almost 2 years ago Robyn underwent emergency surgery for bowel cancer. Initially she was given the all clear by the surgeon as the cancer had all been removed; she was now cancer free. However, this was short lived. After commencing chemotherapy (capecitabine) she suffered severe complications, and had to spend three weeks in hospital. She was unable to finish this course of treatment. Following this she had a scan which showed metastatic cancer in the peritoneum. This was devastating news for Robyn. Robyn was offered a second cycle of chemo (folfox) which she was again unable to complete due to neuro toxicity. In August 2014 she started a third round of chemo (irinotecan) that was completed in January this year.
Along with the treatment provided by the CDHB Robyn has herself funded alternative therapies in her quest to regain good health.
Over the past 18 months, with determination and a positive attitude Robyn has made the best of her time completing some life goals including a 5 day solo tramp and completing the Kepler Challenge.
Sadly, the cancer tumours have grown back quickly, associated with severe pain.
There is still some treatment available to Robyn (cetuximab) which she has commenced. However, this drug is not funded by the public health system. Robyn was hoping that this is where her health insurance would kick in but unfortunately the insurers informed her that they do not sponsor cetuximab as it is not funded by pharmac.
Robyn will require cetuximab treatment on a weekly basis with the cost of treatment about $10,000 a month.
We would be very grateful for any assistance you could give her. Your donation would be very much appreciated and will assist this strong lovely woman to extend her life to spend time with family and friends.
I have opened this give a little page for my courageous, wonderful, younger sister, who has been battling cancer for the past 21 months.
For someone who is so fiercely independent and stoic it is very hard for Robyn to ask for help.
I want to give her every possible chance to continue her life knowing she would do anything in her power to help anyone else in this situation. Your support will be greatly appreciated and will help Robyn fund this last line of treatment available to her.
Robyn's update 29 May 2015
After another short stay in hospital Robyn successfully completed her fourth cetuximab therapy on Thursday and is hoping to continue treatment weekly.
Robyn is currently at home with the support of her family. With her usual determination, resilience and positivity Robyn aims to be involved in daily activities with her family and friends, including watching and supporting the Christchurch Marathon on Sunday 31st May.
