Rose's Road to Recovery

Help support the Lemalu family as they support their mum, Rose, recover from Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia.

Auckland

In January 2019, our family's life was turned upside down. Our mum, Rose (63), was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. This is a very aggressive form of leukaemia and requires urgent treatment. Thanks to the wonderful team at Auckland Hospital's Haematology Unit, her cancer was treated with a range of different treatments; some more successfully than others. In May, Rose received a bone marrow transplant from a generous person in the USA. There were a lot of risks involved but she came out with flying colours.

However, these past few months have been incredibly challenging as Rose was in critical condition as she contracted pneumonia and as a consequence, a collapsed lung. Since then, she has been in the hospital for the past 3 months. Our dad, Tony, is living in the hospital with her and is her full-time carer. He is doing an amazing job.

Rose's road to recovery has been up and down, but it now looks as though we are slowly on the up; she has been transferred to a 'reablement ward'. The doctors are positive that she may be able to walk again (with a frame) in a month's time, and from there a discharge may be on the cards, albeit in a wheelchair.

With all of this said, there have been and continue to be a number of medical-related living costs and general expenses. While everyone in the family is chipping in, we would appreciate any help that you may want to give. This is going to be a long chapter in Rose and Tony's life and we want to make it as burden-free as possible.

Progress so far...  2 November 2019

Firstly, a huge thank you to everyone who has contributed via this page. We are so thankful to have such generous family and friends.

Rose is making real progress with her rehab. In the past week, she has trialled out a walking frame while being assisted by physiotherapists. This is a huge step for her as she has not walked since July.

The funds raised so far will go towards a much needed new and safer car for Tony and Rose. This will also be big enough to fit a wheelchair and/or a walker.

I will update again once Rose has been discharged and is home.

Thank you all again,

Schaeffer, Greer, Devereux and Anastasia
