Ruby is 15 and battling a rare bone cancer. Your donation would make a huge difference to her family.
Wellington
In January this year, Ruby was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer.
Her chemotherapy treatment and surgery plan, was expected to take 30 weeks. However there have been a few rough patches and unpleasant surprises, and the treatment has gone into its 9th month. Sadly Ruby’s cancer has spread to her lungs, and she needs more chemo, that is likely to continue until the end of 2017.
Ruby spent her 15th birthday at the end of March having chemotherapy in Auckland’s Starship Hospital. So far Ruby has had 30 rounds of chemo and a major surgery, to save her arm.
She’s one of the bravest people I know, as she faces further adversity with more chemotherapy and another operation on her lungs.
Ruby’s mum had to leave full-time work to care for Ruby, with the family based in Auckland.
Financially the family is facing hardship and any support you can provide, to help them meet living expenses and bills, would be a huge weight off their minds. Ruby is looking forward to returning to her family home and dog, in time for Christmas.
Ruby has wonderful friends and incredible support from her college and community, and her mum says they are privileged to be surrounded with so much love. Most of all, Ruby misses her wee dog Ted more than anything, and the small trips home between treatments are what Ruby looks forward to the most.
If you are able to support Ruby and her family in any small way, to assist them to continue to manage through this difficult time, we would be incredibly grateful.
Thank you
Ruby, her sister Bonnie and her mum and dad, are staying at Ronald McDonald House in Auckland while she receives treatment. She lives on the Kapiti Coast north of Wellington, with her sister Bonnie and her mum Helen.
I'm involved because I've known Ruby's mum, Helen, for 10 years. The family are such loving and caring people and deserve all the support in the world.
All funds raised will be used to help support Ruby and her family while they are living away from home throughout the course of Ruby's treatment and recovery.
Update 25 August 2017
Hello all, just a quick update that we are extending the end date of this page as Ruby's treatment is still ongoing, and likely to continue until Christmas.
Thanks for your support, the family really appreciate it
Mikayla (on behalf of Helen and the family)
