Much loved tour guide to hundreds of travelers around the world, our beautiful friend Bopha Sok is about to lose his family home in Cambodia
Auckland
In Cambodia, a house serves the lives of the people in each village, which is culture and nature combined.
We met Bopha in 2013 when he took us through his home country of Cambodia and Vietnam as part of a tour with G Adventures.
An unforgettable character, Bopha's friends know him as humble, generous, passionate about his homeland, and always smiling. He spent his early years as a tuk-tuk driver and worked his way into the role of tour guide.
Proud husband and father of three, Bopha is about to lose his family home. If you've traveled with him, you have probably enjoyed a meal there.
- He lost his job as a guide due to COVID-19
- Currently he has no other way of earning money for his family
- His income and job generated opportunities and income for members of his community
- He has a wife, three children, and a village who depend on him
- They owe the bank USD $30,000 for the property
- USD $550 is what it costs to save their home for one more month
- He tried using AirBnB to generate income from the property but COVID-19 has meant that tourists are not visiting Cambodia at present.
This Givealittle campaign is written on behalf of Bopha's many friends around the world and aims to raise enough to keep his family in their home for one year until Bopha can get his job back or find another.
Whether you know him or not, a donation would make a huge difference to a good man with a huge heart.
<<Please give what you can to help Bopha and his family . Every dollar will matter>>
<<The currency for this campaign is New Zealand Dollars (NZD). Visa and Mastercard can be used by donors in most countries world-wide>>
Much love,
Megan, Cliff, and the many friends of Bopha Sok.
Taken from the Wanderlust World Guide Awards website when he won the bronze award, this sums up the impact Bopha has had on so many lives:
"Guiding truly is Bopha’s calling. That’s what one traveller said after a tour with him. And after three years of guiding and leaving his mark on so many clients, it’s hard to disagree. Bopha lives and breathes Cambodia, hailing from a village in Kampong Cham province before moving to Siem Reap to kickstart his career as a guide. He wants his clients to experience a true sense of the country he calls home, getting them to interact with locals and proudly leading them around Cambodia’s iconic sights – especially Angkor Wat.
Many travellers who have been on tours with him acknowledge the incredible difference he makes to their experiences":
“Bopha was so good that I’m hesitating to go on another guided tour as I’m afraid they won’t live up to the legend that is Bopha!”
“I can honestly say that Bopha Sok changed who I am, who my students are and what they will become in the world.”
“Bopha is such a lovely man, and he has such a huge heart.”
“I have travelled the world and been on many tours but Bopha has been, by far, the best guide I have ever had.”
“Bopha helped our group to become a small family. His kind, light heart brought us all together, laughing and sharing.”
“Bopha should be an inspiration to all other guides around the world. He is a credit to himself, his family and G Adventures.”
“Bopha connected us all, making us all one big happy family – we’re all still in touch now.”
We met Bopha when he was our tour guide in Cambodia. He is about to lose his family home due to COVID's impact on tourism so we want try and generate support from his global network of happy customers and friends.
All donations will be given to Bopha to help keep his family in their home.
Let's pay off one third! 30 August 2020
Thanks to 100+ generous donors, we have nearly reached our initial target of NZD $10,800 in only three days!
This means that, together, we've nearly raised enough to keep Bopha's family in their home for one year.
Bopha told us that he had the best sleep in a long time after the first day of the campaign.
Donations continue to flow in from around the world so we're going to keep the campaign going with a new goal of raising enough to pay off one-third of Bopha's total mortgage.
Thank you so much to everyone who has shown support to Bopha so far. This has been an amazing effort from a global community connected by our shared love for this special man.
