500 Ghana children desperately need toilets at their school
International
Can you imagine being in school, and having to go pee and poo in the bushes? That is what kids at this Ghana school are experiencing. Toilets in Africa has volunteers lined up to build toilets for the school of 500. But $3000 is needed for materials.
The project is under the auspices of Toilets for Africa. Did you know that an estimated 27 to 32 million Ghana people can’t afford a latrine and defecate outdoors, creating disease and pollution. Lack of toilet facilities causes 90% of deaths of children under 5 (through diarrhoea, malnutrition, cholera, etc.). “Sanitation is the single most cost-effective public health intervention to reduce child mortality. (World Bank, 2006)”
THE GOAL: To build effective, odourfree toilets for a school that has no functioning units. The separator toilets will have the extra benefit of providing compost for food production.
History: Toilets for Africa began when New Zealander Raewyn Urlich visited Accra in 2020, and witnessed the extreme lack of toilets in homes, schools & public places and the resulting contamination of wells and the environment. Raewyn self-funded and built a composting toilet for four families, and Toilets For Africa was born.
New Zealand volunteer, city planner, and Loop-it Manager Christian Simon continues expanding the volunteer work in Ghana and designing local production of separator units and toilets.
COMPLETED TO DATE: Ten family and household separation composting toilets in Accra, Mazedonai, Acosombo, and Busua.
The first all-metal separator unit has been constructed.
USE OF FUNDS: Money raised provides construction materials for toilets for the schoo. This includes building metal urine-faeces separator units and facilities for enhancing topsoil with Urine/charcoal (biochar) /organic materials.
COSTS: $3000 will cover all costs of construction for the school toilets. Volunteers will provide labour.
COMMUNITY RESPONSE IN GHANA FROM PAST PROJECTS:
After building several separator toilets (with faeces covered with a 50/50 mix of sawdust and topsoil for hot composting), the locals recognized the freedom from odour and pollution. There is now great enthusiasm for toilets directly attached to the house. The children are very excited about having functioning toilets at their school.

Toilets for the school in Busua Ghana 17 May 2023
Thanks to all the individuals who give a little and help make our work possible. Unfortunately the building materials like nearly everything in Ghana have doubled when the civil war in Donbass escalated.
Therefor we've not yet been able to build the toilets for the school in Busua. We continued to build household toilets, which are much appreciated by the people who experienced them.
We continue to work to build more toilets for Africa, and still aspire to the school project as funds continue to be generated. See one of our wheelie bin toilets installed in Busua including simple hand washing basin.
With deep appreciation
